The answer you seek is the one who is asking.

Self-Enquiry Meditation, rooted in the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi, turns awareness back toward its source with one simple question: “Who am I?” Instead of chasing thoughts, you observe the thinker, dissolving illusion and revealing your natural state of peace and presence. This practice is direct, intimate and profound, a shortcut to clarity, stillness and Self-realisation. Join our Self-Enquiry Meditation Community on Siila and grow with us.

Benefits

✔️ Silences overthinking and deepens clarity

✔️ Dissolves ego-driven anxiety and emotional tension

✔️ Awakens self-awareness and lasting inner peace

Self-Enquiry Meditation or Ātma Vichāra, is a direct path to self-realisation through introspective awareness. Introduced and popularised by Sri Ramana Maharshi, it guides the practitioner to turn attention inward and question the very sense of “I”. By observing the source of thought instead of the content of thought, the mind naturally becomes still, revealing a state of pure awareness that is free, present, and undisturbed. Self-Enquiry is not about belief or philosophy, it is about recognising the Self beyond the ego, through direct inner experience.

Origins Across Traditions

Though crystallised by Ramana Maharshi in the early 20th century, Self-Enquiry draws from ancient Advaita Vedānta, the philosophy of non-duality. Similar introspective methods appear in Jnana Yoga, Buddhist vipassana and Sufi contemplative inquiry, all pointing to the same insight: the ego is a mental construction and awareness is our true nature. Self-Enquiry is unique in its simplicity, no rituals, postures or mantras are required, only honest inner attention.

Psychology & Neuroscience

Self-Enquiry interrupts the brain’s habitual narrative loops by breaking identification with thought. Neuroscientists link this to reduced default mode network (DMN) overactivity, which is responsible for rumination, anxiety and self-referential chatter. By shifting from thinking to witnessing, practitioners experience enhanced emotional regulation, metacognition and stress resilience. Self-inquiry practices are also used in modern psychotherapy (ACT, IFS, CBT) where observing the “inner voice” is the first step toward transforming it.

Medical Health Impacts

While deeply spiritual, Self-Enquiry also supports mental and physical wellbeing. Benefits include reduced stress, insomnia, anxiety, and hypertension, as well as improved immune response, emotional balance and cognitive clarity. By loosening identification with worry and fear, the nervous system spends less time in fight-or-flight and more time in states of rest, restoration, and coherence.

Sports & Performance Benefits

Self-Enquiry sharpens focus, self-awareness and emotional neutrality, which are essential for athletes, performers, and leaders. By weakening ego-reactivity, the practitioner becomes less triggered by mistakes, competition or pressure and more able to enter flow states, calm decision-making and sustained concentration.

Beginner or Advanced?

Self-Enquiry is suitable for both beginners and advanced seekers, though the depth of insight unfolds with maturity. Beginners can use the question “Who am I?” to calm overthinking, while advanced meditators use it to dissolve ego and realise the Self beyond mind and identity.

How to Practise

Sit comfortably and close your eyes. When a thought arises, ask gently: “To whom does this thought appear?” The answer is: “To me.” Then enquire: “Who am I?”, turning attention back to the source of awareness. Instead of analysing, simply observe. Each time thoughts appear, repeat the process. Over time, attention rests naturally in silent presence, where no question is needed.
