Benefits

✔️ Builds core and upper-body strength

✔️ Increases spinal flexibility and decompression

✔️ Enhances confidence, coordination and body awareness

Aerial Yoga invites practitioners to experience the body through lightness, suspension and flow. Supported by a silk hammock or swing, familiar yoga postures become opportunities to release tension and rediscover freedom in movement. The practice balances playfulness and precision, cultivating both strength and surrender. By blending elements of acrobatics, alignment and breath, Aerial Yoga teaches how to trust the body, engage the core and find stillness even while floating.

Origins & Philosophy

Developed in the early 2000s by innovators inspired by circus arts, dance and yoga, Aerial Yoga combines traditional asanas with movement therapy and anti-gravity principles. While modern in its form, the philosophy remains rooted in yogic awareness, using the hammock as a tool to explore balance, expansion and inner space. The practice honors both the discipline of yoga and the joy of movement, reminding practitioners that stability and freedom can coexist.

Principles & Main Characteristics

Aerial Yoga uses a suspended fabric hammock to support and challenge the practitioner. Inversions and backbends are often more accessible as the hammock supports body weight, allowing for safe decompression of the spine. The practice alternates between grounded poses, partial suspension and full inversions. Core strength, balance and breath awareness are emphasized throughout. Each transition encourages mindfulness, trust and engagement of stabilizing muscles that may remain dormant in traditional mat practice.

Medical & Wellness Benefits

Suspension releases compression from the spine, improving posture and relieving back tension. The inversions promote circulation and lymphatic flow while enhancing oxygenation of the brain. Aerial Yoga strengthens joints, stabilizers and connective tissue, while the rhythmic swinging motion stimulates the vestibular system, improving balance and coordination. On an emotional level, the sense of weightlessness often brings lightness of mood, confidence and deep relaxation.

Sports & Performance Benefits

Aerial Yoga refines proprioception, balance and endurance - all key attributes for athletes and performers. It enhances recovery by reducing muscular compression and increasing blood flow. For dancers, climbers and gymnasts, it improves agility, grip strength and control while maintaining spinal health through decompression.

Beginner or Advanced?

Aerial Yoga welcomes practitioners of all levels. Beginners learn foundational inversions and supported stretches; advanced students explore complex transitions and aerial flows. With correct instruction, it offers both safety and challenge in equal measure.

How a Class Works / What to Expect

A session begins with ground-based warm-ups and breathwork, followed by introduction to the hammock and simple supported movements. Gradually, practitioners move into suspended poses and inversions, always guided by alignment and breath awareness. Classes often conclude with a floating savasana, cocooned in the fabric - a deep, meditative rest that restores body and mind.
