Benefits

✔️ Reduces stress, anxiety and tension

✔️ Improves sleep, focus and mental clarity

✔️ Supports emotional balance and heart health

Transcendental Meditation (TM) is one of the most widely practised meditation techniques in the world. Developed and taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, a disciple of Brahmananda Saraswati, TM became globally recognized for its simplicity, structure and scientific backing. The technique uses a personal mantra, repeated silently, to help the mind transcend surface thinking and enter a state of restful awareness. Practised for 20 minutes, twice a day, TM offers a path to calmness, clarity and deep relaxation — without requiring concentration, effort or control of the mind.

Origins Across Traditions

TM is rooted in the Vedic tradition of India, part of a long lineage of mantra-based meditation. Maharishi began teaching TM in the late 1950s, and by the 1970s the method had spread globally, supported by over 7,000 trained teachers. Today, more than 40,000 certified instructors continue to share TM worldwide, maintaining consistency in teaching and preserving its traditional structure.

Psychology & Neuroscience

Research shows that TM increases alpha coherence in the brain, associated with relaxation, creativity and emotional balance. It also reduces activation of the amygdala, the brain’s fear and stress center, while strengthening prefrontal cortex functioning, which supports focus and decision-making. Studies indicate that TM allows the nervous system to experience a unique state of restful alertness, a deep form of relaxation while the mind remains awake and aware.

Medical Health Impacts

Hundreds of studies link TM with reduced stress, hypertension, insomnia and anxiety, as well as improved heart health, sleep quality and mood regulation. Regular practice supports lower cortisol, balanced blood pressure and improved recovery from stress-related conditions. TM is also associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and improved resilience to emotional strain.

Sports & Performance Benefits

TM supports focus, recovery and emotional stability, making it valuable for athletes, performers and leaders. By helping the mind settle quickly into calm, TM enhances reaction time, clarity, creativity and stress management, supporting sustained performance under pressure.

Beginner or Advanced?

TM is considered beginner-friendly, as it requires no effort, concentration or breath control. Anyone can practise it, and its simplicity is one reason for its global popularity.

How to Practise

TM uses a silently repeated mantra practised for about 20 minutes twice per day, seated comfortably with eyes closed. The official method is taught by certified TM instructors, who provide a personalised mantra and guidance. Practitioners gently repeat the mantra and allow the mind to settle into deeper states of awareness without effort or control.
