Benefits

✔️ Relieves pain, tension and stress

✔️ Improves mobility, balance and posture

✔️ Supports recovery, resilience and emotional wellbeing

Therapeutic Yoga is a gentle and adaptive approach that applies the tools of yoga - movement, breath, meditation and relaxation - to support healing from physical or emotional conditions. It bridges traditional yogic wisdom with modern science, offering individualized practices for rehabilitation, pain management, and holistic wellness. Rooted in compassion and mindfulness, Therapeutic Yoga empowers practitioners to participate actively in their own healing process, promoting recovery not only of the body but also of mind and spirit.

Origins & Philosophy

Therapeutic Yoga draws its foundations from Hatha and Iyengar Yoga, where alignment, breath and awareness form the pillars of healing. Over time, these principles were refined by yoga therapists and medical professionals integrating physiotherapy, psychology and neuroscience.

The philosophy is simple yet profound: healing happens when the body, mind and breath return to harmony. Every condition - physical, emotional or mental - can improve through conscious awareness, gentle movement and mindful rest. The practice is rooted in the yogic principle of Ahimsa (non-harming), ensuring safety and self-compassion at every step.

Principles & Main Characteristics

Therapeutic Yoga is guided by safety, precision and presence.

Key characteristics include:

Personalized sequences tailored to the practitioner’s needs and abilities.
Supportive props to reduce strain and increase comfort.
Gentle joint mobility and restorative postures for healing.
Breathwork (Pranayama) to regulate the nervous system and energy flow.
Mindfulness and guided relaxation for emotional and cognitive balance.
Sessions may focus on specific areas such as back pain, anxiety, recovery from injury, or postural alignment, always integrating movement with mindful awareness.

Medical & Wellness Benefits

Therapeutic Yoga is increasingly recognized in medical and clinical settings for its benefits in chronic pain management, rehabilitation and stress reduction. It improves mobility, joint function and muscular strength while relieving tension and fatigue. Studies from institutions like Harvard, Duke and the Mayo Clinic show that therapeutic yoga significantly reduces symptoms of anxiety, depression, arthritis, and fibromyalgia.

Through nervous system regulation, it enhances heart rate variability, stabilizes blood pressure and improves immune response. Psychologically, it promotes resilience, self-efficacy and body trust, essential factors in long-term healing.

Sports & Performance Benefits

For athletes, dancers and professionals, Therapeutic Yoga supports injury prevention and recovery. It restores mobility, corrects imbalances and improves body awareness, helping practitioners train more intelligently and safely. Breath regulation techniques enhance endurance and recovery, while mindfulness practices reduce burnout and performance anxiety.

Beginner or Advanced?

Therapeutic Yoga is suitable for all levels, including those recovering from injury, illness, or stress. No prior experience is needed. Teachers adapt every posture and breathing technique to individual conditions, ensuring safety and comfort. Advanced practitioners benefit from its precision and depth, learning to fine-tune alignment and awareness.

How a Class Works / What to Expect

A Therapeutic Yoga class begins with a brief consultation or awareness check-in, followed by gentle stretching, restorative postures and breath exercises. Teachers may use props such as bolsters, blocks or straps to support healing. The pace is slow, intentional and deeply mindful. Classes often conclude with Nidra Yoga or Guided Meditation, allowing integration and rest. The goal is not performance, but balance - creating a steady space where the body and mind can repair naturally.
